  • Living Wills – What do YOU want at the end of life?

Let your loved ones know what you want at the end of your life. Choose the person who will carry out your wishes, whether or not they agree with them. Give them something to hold up to other family members and loved ones who may want to dispute what YOU have asked for. It will be a gift to your family.

When Your Parents Can’t Handle Their Own Affairs

Learn, ask questions – It’s unimaginable that our parents, or other older loved ones, may come to the point where they are no longer the people we remember – over 90, physically unable though still mentally alert; no longer know who they or their family is when only a few years ago they were sharp as tacks; still relatively young and memory is problematic.

Please check your title to see if indicates how owned. If owned as two single people, talk to someone about modifying the title. You’ll save people grief!

Can you even begin to imagine that your children EVER be in foster care, even for only a few hours? It can be avoided with a little thought and planning and a couple of legal documents.

  • Basic Steps to Estate Planning, Step 3: Establish Your Directives

Directives are documents that are essential to have while you’re living. They cover financial and health considerations.

Included in these are Durable Powers of Attorney – giving a trusted person powers to transact a multitude of financial transactions; Medical Directions include Designation of Health Care Surrogates – someone to make health decisions; Living Wills – a document outlining end of life choices, HIPAA Waivers – giving people the right to speak to your physicians. And, there are others.

  • Healing – Closing Gaps

Part of how best to plan is to consider how you might heal rifts in the family or, at least, find a way to be at peace with them.

  • A New Year – Leaving a Legacy
